The Practice Field
The Practice Field | 3 Achieving such a result would require turf conditioning with the aid of a heating system. This technique, known as turf warming, would keep the field green during cold weather and prevent snow and ice buildup during winter. The next consideration was which method of heat distribution to use: electric or hydronic? Hydronic heating is generally better than electric heating in large-scale applications due to its cost- effectiveness, energy efficiency, and longevity. While the up-front costs may be higher than electric systems, hydronic systems typically have much longer lifespans, lower maintenance requirements, and lower operating costs due to the high heat capacity of fluid-based media like water and glycol. Knowing this, Sports Turf Systems reached out to Legend’s partners at Independent Pipe of Canton, MA, to acquire the necessary heating tube for the turf warming project. Legend provided 29 miles, or 153,150 linear feet of 3/4” LegendFlex ® Oxygen Barrier PEX heating tube, and thousands of feet of Plastic Tube Mounting Rails.
